He mixed roasted semolina or rava with water and some spices, and cooked it over a low flame until it became a thick and creamy porridge. He then served it to the travellers, who found it to be not only delicious but also very filling and energising.

Word of Sushruta’s creation spread quickly, and soon, Upma became a staple breakfast dish across South India. The story of its origin highlights the importance of using local and seasonal ingredients to create healthy and nutritious meals, and the idea that good food can be both simple and satisfying.
